Bay leaf

Eat 2 gather background

Bay leaf comes from the bay plant. It can grow up to 15 meters high and thrives in Mediterranean countries such as Greece and Turkey. You can find the dried leaves in almost every kitchen cabinet, as it is widely used as a flavor enhancer in stews, marinades, soups, and sauces.

Tip: Try adding some bay leaf to your bathwater. It has a muscle-relaxing effect.

Did-you-know: In Roman times, bay leaf was known as a symbol of victory. This is where the term bay leaf wreath comes from, with which winners were crowned. Just browse through the comic books of Asterix and Obelix: Julius Caesar is always depicted with a bay leaf wreath.

Recipe for bay leaf tea: Bay leaf is rich in potassium, magnesium, and vitamins B6, B9, and C, and is therefore very healthy. It can also be enjoyed as a tea. Let 3 to 4 leaves steep in hot water, and after 10 minutes you have a mug of delicious bay leaf tea. Optionally sweeten with a little honey.

Bay leaves are often used by chefs in stews and in the French cuisine.
