Do you know where the word picnic comes from?

Chances are high that you'll end up on a picnic blanket somewhere this summer. But did you know that the word picnic actually comes from France?

The French word pique-nique has existed since 1694. At that time, it didn't mean sitting outside in the grass to eat, but rather joining someone at home for a meal where everyone contributed to the costs or brought something to eat.

It wasn't until the early 19th century that the word crossed over to England. There, the spelling changed to picnic and it acquired the meaning we know today: eating and drinking together outdoors.

From that moment, picnicking became wildly popular. People no longer stayed in their own gardens but ventured out to parks, forests, and other green spaces to enjoy food, drink, and good company.

In fact, little has changed over the years. Whether you opt for a simple blanket in the park or a fully styled summer gathering with beautiful glasses, shared dining, and a Limoncello Spritz: the essence of a picnic remains the same.
